SSE is recruiting an experienced Protection Engineer to join its Distribution Technical Services team, supporting a major capital investment programme across the North of Scotland.

This role suits a senior electrical engineer with strong protection and control experience who is confident providing technical leadership on complex distribution network projects.

The role

You will provide technical leadership and design assurance for protection and control systems on the distribution network up to 33 kV.

You will review and approve protection designs, relay settings, and commissioning documentation produced by contractors.

You will act as a design authority for protection related technical queries, deviations, and engineering challenges.

You will shape project scope and influence investment decisions through technical reviews and scoping documentation.

You will carry out detailed protection and control design work where required, including schematics, grading studies, and relay settings.

You will support site activities including commissioning, energisation, fault investigation, and post fault analysis.

You will mentor and support less experienced engineers within the wider technical services team.

You will work closely with capital delivery teams, operations, control rooms, and external contractors to ensure safe and compliant delivery.

Working pattern

This is a permanent, full time role with Flexible First working options available.

The role involves travel across the North of Scotland.

A vehicle is provided for work related travel, with the potential to join the company car scheme subject to policy criteria.

A valid driving licence is essential.

What we are looking for

A strong safety focused approach with experience managing engineering risk.

A qualification in Electrical Engineering to a minimum of HNC level or equivalent experience.

Significant experience in power system protection design, commissioning, and assurance, ideally within distribution networks up to 33 kV.

The confidence to challenge designs and provide independent technical judgement.

Experience with protection relays, testing equipment, and manufacturer tools.

Familiarity with industry software such as PowerFactory and AutoCAD.

Operational experience on a distribution network is highly desirable.
