Historic Environment Scotland is recruiting a Labourer to join its Monument Conservation Unit based at Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness.

This is a permanent and pensionable position supporting the conservation, routine maintenance and presentation of one of Scotland’s most iconic historic sites.

The role

Mixing lime and cement mortars and transporting materials across site.
Operating small plant equipment including cement mixers.
Supporting tradespersons with masonry conservation following training.
Undertaking grounds maintenance including turf repairs, weed control and landscape management.
Carrying out responsive maintenance works as required.
Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment.
Assisting with transport of staff, plant and materials across the region.
Working at height and in confined spaces where required.

Working pattern

Full time, 35 hours per week.
Permanent contract.
Interviews held in person at Urquhart Castle week commencing 25 February 2026.

What we are looking for

Practical experience using lime mortars.
Understanding of health and safety procedures.
Experience operating small plant equipment.
Knowledge of different mortar types and mix proportions.
Good hand eye coordination and practical skills.
Reliable and professional approach to site work.
